Edmonton: a world leader in waste management

FEBRUARY 24 | 2010 | 8:30 AM

Occasionally we want to bring you news about exciting developments in sustainability from related industries. Today we are presenting a series of news releases about a waste-to-biofuels project coming to Edmonton. This city is already recognized as having a progressive and effective waste management program, with diversion of recyclables and compostable material already occurring at world class levels. There is still a large component of waste that goes to landfills, however, and over time this releases toxins and greenhouse gases. Numerous technologies have been used to reduce this impact, from capturing landfill gas to power a turbine and create power (which happens at the Clover Bar landfill), to using various thermal destruction techniques (pyrolysis, combustion, gasification) to extract more energy from the waste material before the residue is disposed of. Another option now exsits and that is to turn the waste into a liquid fuel, typically ethanol (already used for automotive transport to reduce emissions).

If we recall the energy pyramids, recovery of waste energy provides the most return on "energy investment" after reducing the amount of energy needed in the first place. The company pioneering this technology, Enerkem Ltd., is a Canadian company with headquarters in Montreal. We can all be proud of this Canadian innovation, leading the world towards sustainable energy practices!

May 20, 2009: Announcement of world class waste-to-biofuels facility.

September 14, 2009: Construction to begin on the facility.

October 1, 2009: Waste heat to be recovered to warm homes in Strathcona county.

October 23, 2009: Recognition as one of Canada's "Emerging Cleantech Leaders".

February 24, 2010: Funding received for completion of the facility.
