"Leadership in car design requires leadership in car dealership design.",
"This elegant flagship car dealership is worthy of efficient, yet uncompromising mechanical systems. An expansive two-storey feature wall enclosing the South side of the showroom gallery causes significant heating and cooling loads. Other spaces comprising the 25,500 ft2 facility include offices, locker rooms, a cafe, part storage, and a fourteen bay service area. The design solution boasts fourteen separate zones served by a forty-eight hole geothermal system complete with in-slab, radiant heating and cooling. Fan coils in the ceiling space ensure proper ventilation and occupant comfort. All three air handling units on the roof are all equipped with heat recovery, and thirty-six solar thermal collectors heat cold outdoor air to reduce natural gas consumption. The result is an estimated sixty-four ton reduction in annual greenhouse gas emissions. The federal government's Accelerated Capital Cost Allowance, which lets businesses depreciate the value of green systems quicker than traditional elements, justified the extra costs of geothermal."

"This 2,200 ft2 project pursued a LEED® Silver rating through the LEED® Commercial Interiors (LEED® CI) rating system. This space not only allowed Vital Engineering to expand its operations but it also serves to be a living demonstration of technologies and materials that promote a more comfortable and sustainable building environment. The space layout was designed with special attention given to day lighting and occupant comfort; only low emitting materials were chosen for new office furnishings, flooring and interior finishes. Each interior office features high efficiency lighting with occupancy sensors while open work areas with exterior windows also feature photocell controls to compensate for day-lighting conditions. Uniquely, Vital Engineering Coordinated all aspects of the LEED® process, not just the mechanical items, providing the project team with an Owner's perspective on the process."

"This 13,000 ft2 office building located in Lethbridge, Alberta will serve as the new head office for the Alberta Conservation Association. With a goal of achieving Net Zero Energy usage, as well as a LEED® Gold rating, numerous sustainable strategies are implemented in the building. The building will utilize a geothermal system to provide all the heating and cooling for the building as well as an energy recovery ventilator and a solar wall to treat outside air. Enhanced thermal comfort will be achieved with the use of an in-slab heating and cooling system with a dedicated ventilation system. The building will create most of its energy on site with the use of multiple wind turbines as well as a 8-10kW PV array on the roof. Other sustainable strategies include harvesting rainwater from the roof to reduce the amount of water used for sewage conveyance."

"The geothermal system for this project demonstrates its usefulness for large commercial spaces.",
"On 94th Street and 51st Avenue in Edmonton Alberta is a 210,000 square foot business park development. Vital Engineering provided the Site Civil and Mechanical Engineering Services to Guild Properties. The project consists of three 3-storey Office Warehouse buildings and a single four storey Office Building. A single level underground parkade occupies nearly 1/3 of the site area under the four storey Office Building and interconnects with one of the Office Warehouse buildings. Vital worked closely with the City of Edmonton Drainage Department to coordinate a very complex service tie-in in 51st Avenue. Grading was challenging due to a long and narrow site with Warehouse access requirements. The heating and cooling source for all four buildings is provided through an Earth Energy System consisting of 320 - 250 ft deep boreholes located strategically on the site. The building systems consist of a series of interconnected low temperature water loops and extended range water source heat pumps. Occupant air is being provided by a dedicated outside air system that uses the heat in the waste air from washrooms and other areas to preheat the outside air at winter design conditions. It also recovers cooling during summer conditions from the same sources to temper the warm summer fresh air. Some impacts to the Architectural elements included; small Mechanical Rooms, one roof penetration per building for ventilation systems, quiet operation, minimal ceiling space requirement, an insignificant amount of vertical shafting through the floors adding to the overall floor space."

"These new buildings are a replacement to the existing shelters that have been accommodating users of the Whitemud Park toboggan hill, all year Edmonton Catholic Schools' and City of Edmonton's summer day camp programs. The Amenities building simply includes a barrier-free washroom and vestibule, which provides users with accessible washrooms, drinking water, changing areas and basic shelter for the trail and park/picnic areas. The Trailhead building hosts two activity rooms, storage, barrier-free washrooms as well as a warm-up area. Buildings are designed to meet a minimum LEED® Silver rating. The Amenities building features extremely high performance envelope, passive geothermal heating, solar PV as well as waterless urinals and other high performance fixtures. The Amenities building is designed to be \"off-grid\" and to be a model for future remote installations of an identical building. The Trailhead building features 13 geothermal holes connected in a primary/secondary system to three two-stage heat pumps, including VFD controlled pumps, domestic hot water heating via two desuperheaters, as well as high performance plumbing fixtures."

"There are several steps required before grain off a farmers truck becomes fuel fit for an engine. The processing of biodiesel requires some high energy inputs like steam but also has stages of cooling. To minimize the process energy required, mechanisms for efficient energy transfer will be used in a way that heating and cooling are not separate energy intensive events, but rather two sides of a complementary process. Proven technology like heat recovery ventilators (HRV) will also be used in the facility. These units transfer the heat from warm, building exhaust air to the incoming fresh air. In a process space with lots of heat radiating off the equipment, an HRV will be most effective on the coldest days of Canola meal drying Energy transfer will be accomplished by a network of pipes linking buildings and processes together. This will be integrated into the geothermal field, which is very well suited to be an energy source or sink in such a system."

"The Enmax Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo required careful climate control for their facility as well as a target for leadership in energy use, exemplifying the concept of \"conservatory\". Vital Engineering designed a geothermal heating and cooling system. The system is sized to provide 420 Mbh of cooling to the building using two, six inch injection wells and one rejection well. Each injection well will include a 4\" high flow submersible pump providing 90 USGPM each (180 USGPM total) of water to a heat exchanger in the building. This part of the project supports the overall goal of a LEED® Platinum certification. To achieve this, all aspects of design had to be carefully integrated through the design process. "An intelligent integration of existing technologies and control strategies will make this 29 suite apartment a net zero energy building. Located in an affordable housing community in Edmonton, Alberta energy efficiency does not come at the expense of comfort. Starting with a well insulated, air-tight envelope complete with large triple-glazed south facing windows, passive solar gains are maximized and heat loss is minimized. Low flow, low temperature radiators efficiently heat the spaces while flat plate solar thermal collectors provide domestic hot water heating. Excess hot water in the summer is circulated through the geothermal borefield to improve the efficiency of the geothermal system. Natural and demand controlled ventilation along with heat recovery greatly reduce energy for conditioning and distributing fresh air to the spaces. The grid-tied solar PV system, including some modules mounted on the south balconies that provide shading from the hot summer sun, offsets the yearly energy use making this building the first of its kind in Canada."

"This proposed multi high-rise development consists of a new 22 storey office warehouse, a 40 storey and 32 storey residential towers. Vital Engineering was retained to provide a detailed feasibility and cost analysis for an Earth Energy System. We undertook a detailed analysis that reviewed costs and performance issues associated with open and closed loop geothermal systems as well integrated solar systems for water heating and loop charging. An analysis of the geology and area-specific water well / soil data concluded that an Earth Energy System was not only viable, but would have an equal or lower first cost than a traditional heating/cooling system. In our study, we provided information on new tax initiatives that were introduced in the March 2007 federal budget that had a significant impact on the cost base and the client's ability to write off the engineering and installation of the Earth Energy System under the accelerated capital cost allowance program. Subsequent to this study, Vital Engineering was retained to provide a detailed energy use simulation and comparative analysis for four different scenarios. This analysis is being used as a practical tool to generate energy use budgets and provide economic justification for high performance building initiatives such as improved envelope, chilled beam cooling systems and geothermal plant systems."

"The Whitecourt Arena required an expansion and renovation to the existing facility to meet growing demand for ice time. A plan to modernize the dressing rooms, improve services and increase access required improvements to the existing HVAC system. Vital Engineering analyzed the expanded system design and developed a construction plan to modify services to the locker room. A 100% fresh air unit will improve air quality while a heat wheel will recover energy from the exhaust air, reducing energy consumption."
